Windsor, Ontario: ENWIN Utilities Ltd. is launching a pilot project with Neural D Inc. to evaluate artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technology for the inspection and management of utility infrastructure.

A vehicle equipped with specialized cameras is currently travelling through select areas of ENWIN's service territory, to capture images of utility poles and related electrical infrastructure from public roadways. The pilot project will evaluate how AI can support utility asset identification, condition assessment and the detection of potential defects.

The pilot is part of ENWIN's ongoing commitment to exploring innovative tools that support the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to customers.

"Utility pole inspections are an important part of maintaining a safe and reliable electrical system. This pilot will help us evaluate the potential of AI-assisted technology to improve infrastructure condition assessments and identify maintenance needs, supporting effective long-term planning and service reliability for our customers," said Marvio Vinhaes, Director Engineering, Hydro.

The pilot focuses on utility infrastructure visible from public roadways, including utility poles, overhead conductors, and pole-mounted equipment.

ENWIN recognizes the importance of protecting customer privacy. The pilot is being conducted under a formal agreement that includes requirements related to privacy protection, data security, access controls, data retention, and secure disposal.
