Windsor, ON: The Windsor Utilities Commission (WUC) and its operating partner, ENWIN Utilities Ltd. (ENWIN), are marking 25 years of experience using ozone to support the delivery of safe drinking water to the community. This milestone will be recognized with the return of guided tours at the A. H. Weeks Water Treatment Plant (WTP) for schools, colleges, universities, water professionals and elected officials, providing a renewed opportunity to learn about Windsor’s drinking water treatment process and the continued role of ozone technology.

Ozone Water Treatment:

In June 2001, the A. H. Weeks Water Treatment Plant (WTP) first introduced ozone as its primary method of water treatment.  At the time, ozone was recognized as a strong and effective disinfectant, but it was not yet widely used in Ontario’s drinking water systems. Windsor’s early adoption positioned the A. H. Weeks facility as the first in the province to implement this technology, helping pave the way for broader use across the sector.

Over the past 25 years, ozone has played an important role in addressing water quality challenges, including blue-green algae and other naturally occurring contaminants. Its successful application at the A. H. Weeks Water Treatment Plant has demonstrated the effectiveness of the technology and contributed to its wider adoption by other utilities.

Ongoing upgrades and regular maintenance supported the continued performance of the system. Through years of hands-on experience, water system staff have developed specialized expertise in operating and maintaining ozone equipment, helping ensure consistent day-to-day operations and long‑term system reliability.

As WUC and ENWIN mark 25 years of ozone water treatment, the milestone reflects both a forward-looking decision made in 2001 and the continued commitment to maintaining and advancing Windsor’s water system today.

A.H. Weeks Water Treatment Plant Guided Tours

Guided tours at the A. H. Weeks Water Treatment Plant will return in fall 2026. Tours are open to schools, colleges, universities, water professionals, and elected officials, providing a renewed opportunity to learn how Windsor’s drinking water is treated and the role ozone technology continues to play in the process.

The refreshed program will offer an interactive look at how water from the Detroit River is treated and delivered to homes and businesses across Windsor, LaSalle, and Tecumseh. More information on tour availability and how to participate will be released closer to the program launch.
